Hillside Montessori Adolescent program
The Hillside Montessori Adolescent class is a well-established and thriving learning program within a supportive school community. The school has just moved onto a brand new 13-acre campus and is seeking an Adolescent Co-Guide. The new campus offers an abundance of outdoor learning possibilities with indoor facilities designed specifically for and by Montessori guides. Thanks to an abundance of local resources, our learning experiences are filled with the arts, outdoor excursions, and dynamic speakers/demonstrators.

General Responsibilities:
The Hillside Montessori Adolescent Co-Guide (ACG) works with adolescents in grades 7-8. The Co-Guide must, first and foremost, deeply love and respect working with this age group and must be able to challenge and inspire the active minds and bodies of the adolescent. The Co-Guide must be intellectually curious, well grounded in a broad range of academic areas, have a wellspring of energy, a good sense of humor, and be able to communicate fairly and effectively with students and their parents.

The ACG must be highly organized, a good listener, a keen observer, and diplomatic. The ACG should be conversant with the precepts of Montessori philosophy and seek to integrate them as much as possible within the curriculum. An integrated, interdisciplinary curriculum, developed with the other team members under the auspices of the Adolescent Lead Guide should provide students with a balance between self-directed and group learning activities.

The ACG must be willing to work in a collaborative atmosphere, be open-minded, non-competitive and must be committed to developing a safe, comfortable place to learn and grow.


Teaching Responsibilities:

The Adolescent Co-Guide will work with the ALG to:

Academics:
Work with the ALG to plan the scope and integration of curriculum across the disciplines
Give lessons and observe/review student work
Choose and help plan appropriate experiences for class trips
Partner with ALG individual student learning needs are met

Student Life:
Communicate with families of students in coordination with the ALG
Participate in community meetings and discussions
Plan, with team and adolescents, service-learning opportunities
Work with the ALG to ensure that individual student emotional needs are addressed
Share in the support of student-run businesses (micro-economy)

Administrative Responsibilities:
The Adolescent Co-Guide is routinely responsible for:

Adolescent Community personnel
Provide ongoing support to team members, to include observations and feedback
Participate in team goal setting and self-reflection (and share with the Head of School)
Collaborate with enrichment guides (art, music, theater, etc.)

Admissions
Attend and support admission Open House
Support students in High School admissions process
Collaborate with admissions to schedule applicant visits


Events
Graduation - coordinate with Head of School to organize graduation ceremony
Collaborate with Faculty and Staff to organize holiday and parent programs



Professional Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor of Arts or Science
Thorough understanding of and belief in Montessori philosophy
Skill in an academic area of specialization
Preferred:
Staff supervision and management experience
Experience in the art of team teaching
Teaching in a Middle School Program

Required Professional Development:
All staff are required to complete the following during each year of employment:
Outside observation of a classroom at your level (full 3-hour morning work cycle)
In-House observation - observe classrooms in each level
Seminar, conference, or workshop (must be pre-approved by HoS at least 10 professional development hours over the course of the school year
Outside reading that is pertinent to your position at the school

Community Engagement:
Attend school community events, engaging with parents during most of your time at the event.
Be responsible for taking photos and video in classrooms.
Offer one media outreach piece (video interview or lesson presentation) And/ Or participate in a parent partnership presentation each year.


Position Details:
This is a 10-month full time position with occasional weekend and evening hours over the course of the school year. Hours are Monday thru Friday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm, and as needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. During the summer the position requires occasional email communication and calls to parents and admin staff.
